Ruby goodness and sweet memories

Picking these ruby coloured, translucent red currants takes me straight back to my childhood, to my grandmas’ garden.

My memories of mid July as a child are drenched in sunshine, in the freedom of the summer holidays and in the perfume of soft fruit hanging tantalising and heavy with ruby fruit on bushes not so easy reach, at the back of my grand mothers’ garden. My sister and I would gorge every day on red currants and sharp but bursting with flavour gooseberries. Our neighbour had raspberries in her garden and when we could quietly sneak over we’d wade through the bushes, filling our grinning mouth as quickly as we could. What a treat that was! How clearly I can still see those days as soon as I find myself in the garden picking fruit.

I am so grateful to have plenty of raspberries, gooseberries, red currants and black currants in the garden right now. They fill me with delight just as much today as they did when I was a small child discovering the sweetness and the allure of soft fruit, in my grandma’s garden, half way through the summer. #goodthings
